For many families, the cost of sanitary pads is prohibitive. Teenagers from low-income households often go without proper menstrual products due to limited financial resources. Lack of funds forces some girls to use unsafe alternatives, which can lead to infections or discomfort. Programs that focus on providing sanitary pads to marginalized communities help fill this gap, but funding and distribution often fall short of meeting the widespread need. Ensuring affordable or free access to pads is essential for health, school attendance, and confidence.
Logistical Challenges
Even when sanitary pads are affordable, distribution can be a major hurdle. Rural or underserved areas may lack stores or supply chains to provide consistent access. Schools and community centers often play a key role in bridging this gap through nonprofit organizations donating menstrual products, but supply shortages and logistical constraints prevent many girls from receiving products regularly. Establishing sustainable delivery methods is essential to ensure that every girl has access when she needs it.
Societal and Cultural Factors
Cultural stigma around menstruation exacerbates the problem. Many girls feel embarrassed or ashamed to ask for sanitary pads or discuss their needs openly. Misconceptions about menstruation also limit community support and advocacy efforts. Initiatives aimed at breaking menstrual stigma in underserved communities help normalize conversations, encourage acceptance, and empower girls to seek assistance without fear of judgment. Social education is as important as physical access to products in addressing period poverty.

The Importance of Education
Providing knowledge alongside products is critical. Schools and community programs that integrate menstrual health hygiene education for preteen girls equip students with the skills and confidence to manage their periods safely. Awareness about hygiene, proper usage of pads, and understanding bodily changes ensures that girls can make informed choices about their health, even in challenging circumstances.
Help Girls Access Essential Hygiene
We are Nishka Utpat and Kaanchi Utpat, two teenage sisters who have started a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity called Utpat Foundation. Our goal is to raise awareness among preteens and teenage girls about access to menstrual hygiene products for low-income girls, education, and other social issues. Through our efforts, we strive to help young girls understand their coming-of-age experiences, dispel fears, and build confidence in managing their menstrual health. The Utpat Foundation also runs a podcast, Girlhood Unfiltered, available on Apple iTunes, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and Amazon Audible. Additionally, we have a YouTube channel, Utpat Sisters, with over 4.7k subscribers and 279k+ views, dedicated to empowering young girls through education and awareness.
