A period can start unexpectedly, especially when menstrual cycles are still becoming established during the teenage years. Having essential supplies ready can make it easier to manage bleeding at school, while traveling, or during everyday activities. A period preparedness kit for teens can provide practical support while also helping teenagers feel more confident about handling their menstrual health.
This guide covers the useful supplies, personal items, and information teens can keep together so they are prepared when their period arrives.
Essential Supplies for a Period Kit
A useful period kit does not need to be large or complicated. The goal is to include items that are practical, easy to carry, and suited to the teenager’s individual needs.
Menstrual Products
Pads, tampons, menstrual cups, or period underwear can be included depending on what a teenager is comfortable using. For someone who primarily uses pads, carrying several different sizes or absorbencies can be useful for different stages of a period.
Teenagers can also keep a few products in their school bag, locker, or another easily accessible place.
Spare Underwear and Clothing
An unexpected leak can be stressful, particularly when a teenager is away from home. A spare pair of underwear can provide a simple backup.
A lightweight pair of leggings, shorts, or another comfortable clothing item can also be useful when there is a possibility that clothing may become stained.
Disposal Bags
Small opaque or resealable bags can provide a practical way to carry used menstrual products until they can be disposed of properly. These can also be useful when a suitable disposal bin is not immediately available.
Understanding appropriate disposal is an important part of menstrual health hygiene education for preteen girls and teenagers alike.
Tissues or Wipes
Unscented tissues or personal wipes can be useful for cleaning up during a period. They can provide an extra level of convenience when using a school or public restroom.
However, wipes should not be flushed unless the product specifically states that it is suitable for flushing.
Making Period Preparation Part of Menstrual Education
We are Nishka Utpat and Kaanchi Utpat, two teenage sisters who have started a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity called Utpat Foundation, committed to advancing menstrual equity programs for teens and preteens. Our goal is to raise awareness among preteens and teenage girls about menstrual hygiene, education, and other social issues. Through our efforts, we strive to help young girls understand their coming-of-age experiences, dispel fears, and build confidence in managing their menstrual health. The Utpat Foundation also runs a podcast, Girlhood Unfiltered, available on Apple iTunes, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and Amazon Audible. Additionally, we have a YouTube channel, Utpat Sisters, with over 4.7k subscribers and 279k+ views, dedicated to empowering young girls through education and awareness.
